What is fileproviderd on Mac?
fileproviderd sits between Finder and the apps that put cloud storage on your Mac. When you open, change, or list files in iCloud Drive or another provider’s folder, fileproviderd coordinates that with the provider so the local and cloud copies stay in step.
- Part of
- macOS’s File Provider system, used by iCloud Drive and other cloud storage apps.
- Safe?
- Yes. It is part of macOS.
- Can I quit it?
- You can, but macOS starts it again and syncing picks up where it left off.
The short answer
A busy fileproviderd means lots of cloud files are changing or being listed. It’s common after turning on iCloud Drive or Desktop & Documents syncing, moving a big folder into a synced location, or working in a project folder that lives inside one. It usually settles once the files are in sync.
Normal use
What fileproviderd usually looks like.
When nothing is syncing, fileproviderd uses little CPU and a modest amount of memory.
During a large sync it can stay busy for a long time, often alongside bird and cloudd for iCloud Drive or the provider’s own app for other services.
Why fileproviderd uses so much CPU or memory
- A first sync
Turning on iCloud Drive, Desktop & Documents Folders, or a new cloud storage app means every file has to be checked.
- Moving big folders
Dragging a large folder into a synced location turns into thousands of individual file changes.
- Projects inside synced folders
Code projects, dependency folders, and build output create and rewrite huge numbers of small files. In a synced folder, every one of them has to be tracked.
- Optimize Mac Storage
With Optimize Mac Storage on, files move between your Mac and iCloud as space and use change, which adds download and removal work.
How to calm fileproviderd down
Start at the top. Each step is more disruptive than the one before.
- Let the sync finish
Keep your Mac awake, on power, and on a good network until it catches up.
- Move projects out of synced folders
Keep code projects and other folders full of fast-changing files outside iCloud Drive and other synced locations.
- Pause the other provider
If you use another cloud storage app, pause syncing from its menu bar icon while you work.
- Review your iCloud Drive options
Open System Settings, click your name, then iCloud → Drive. Check whether Desktop & Documents Folders and Optimize Mac Storage are set the way you want.
- Restart
If fileproviderd stays busy with nothing changing, a restart clears it.
Seeing it in Spare
Find what it’s reacting to.
fileproviderd often climbs because something is writing files into a synced folder. Spare shows development projects and AI agents grouped by project folder, so if a build or an agent is churning through files inside iCloud Drive, you can spot it alongside the sync.
Spare treats fileproviderd as a system task and never offers to stop it.
Common questions
About fileproviderd
Is fileproviderd a virus?
No. It is part of macOS and supports iCloud Drive and other cloud storage.
Can I delete or disable fileproviderd?
No. It is a protected system process, and cloud folders in Finder depend on it. Reduce what it has to sync instead.
Why is fileproviderd busy when I’m not using iCloud Drive?
Other cloud storage apps can use the same system. Check whether one of them is syncing.
How is fileproviderd related to bird and cloudd?
They work together. fileproviderd connects Finder to the provider, bird handles iCloud Drive, and cloudd handles CloudKit data for apps.
