What is photoanalysisd on Mac?

photoanalysisd is the macOS agent that analyzes your Photos library in the background. It powers Memories, People & Pets, and searching your photos for scenes and objects, such as “beach” or “dog”.

Part of
The macOS Photos library analysis agent.
Safe?
Yes. It is part of macOS and works on your Photos library on your Mac.
Can I quit it?
Not usefully. macOS starts it again and the analysis picks up where it left off.

The short answer

High CPU from photoanalysisd is normal after you import a lot of photos, create a new library, or update macOS. It is doing a one-time job, and it settles down when it finishes. Apple says it can take anywhere from a short time to a few days, depending on your library.

Normal use

What photoanalysisd usually looks like.

On a Mac whose library is already analyzed, photoanalysisd is usually idle, using little CPU and memory, and only does small amounts of work when new photos arrive.

After a big import or a macOS update, it can use a lot of CPU for hours. Apple notes that Photos on Mac does this analysis when you aren’t using the app, so it often runs while your Mac is otherwise quiet.

Why photoanalysisd uses so much CPU or memory

How to calm photoanalysisd down

Start at the top. Each step is more disruptive than the one before.

  1. Let it finish

This is a one-time job for each batch of photos. Leave your Mac on and awake with Photos closed, and it usually settles within hours to a few days.

  2. Keep Photos closed while it works

Photos on Mac analyzes your library when you aren’t using the app, so leaving Photos open can stretch the process out.

  3. Stagger big imports

If you’re moving a huge library, importing it in batches spreads the analysis over time.

  4. Update macOS

Install pending updates in System Settings → General → Software Update, in case a fix applies to Photos analysis.

  5. Restart if it never settles

If it keeps running hard for many days with no new photos, restart your Mac. Save your work first.

Seeing it in Spare

Find what it’s reacting to.

photoanalysisd tends to start while you’re away. Spare’s recap window shows CPU and memory pressure for Today, This week, and the Last 7 days, and the “While you were away” summary tells you what was busy, so a fan that spun up overnight has an explanation.

Spare treats macOS processes like photoanalysisd as system tasks and never offers to stop them.
