What is remoted on Mac?
remoted is the macOS daemon that discovers remote devices and the services they offer. When you plug in an iPhone or iPad, remoted is part of how your Mac finds it and talks to it for things like Finder syncing and Xcode debugging.
- Part of
- Apple’s Remote Service Discovery daemon, part of macOS.
- Safe?
- Yes. It is an Apple system daemon, not remote-access malware.
- Can I quit it?
- No. launchd restarts it right away, and connected-device features can drop until it’s back.
The short answer
The name sounds alarming, but remoted is a normal part of macOS and has nothing to do with someone controlling your Mac remotely. It is usually idle. Brief activity when you connect a device is expected; sustained high use usually points to a device or developer tool stuck reconnecting.
Normal use
What remoted usually looks like.
Most of the time remoted uses close to 0% CPU and only a few megabytes of memory. You may never see it near the top of a list.
It wakes up when a device connects or disconnects. Since iOS 17, a connected iPhone appears to the Mac as a small network device over USB, and remoted handles discovering it, so a short burst when you plug in is normal.
Why remoted uses so much CPU or memory
- Connecting an iPhone or iPad
Plugging in a device starts discovery and a secure connection. remoted is busy for a moment, then goes quiet.
- A flaky cable or connection
A device that keeps disconnecting and reconnecting makes remoted repeat its discovery work over and over.
- Developer tools talking to devices
Xcode and other tools that install or debug apps on a connected device rely on the services remoted exposes.
How to calm remoted down
Start at the top. Each step is more disruptive than the one before.
- Unplug and reconnect the device
If remoted is busy, disconnect any iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device, wait a moment, and plug it back in.
- Try a different cable or port
A worn cable or a hub that drops the connection can cause repeated reconnects. Connect directly to the Mac if you can.
- Quit tools you aren’t using
Close Xcode or other device management apps when you’re not working with a device.
- Restart your Mac and the device
A restart of both ends clears a stuck connection. Save your work first.
Seeing it in Spare
Find what it’s reacting to.
remoted rarely shows up on its own. When it does, Spare puts it in context next to your apps, development projects, and AI agents, so you can see whether Xcode or a device-related tool was active at the same time.
Spare treats macOS processes like remoted as system tasks and never offers to stop them.
Common questions
About remoted
Is remoted a virus or remote-access tool?
No. It is Apple’s Remote Service Discovery daemon at /usr/libexec/remoted. “Remote” refers to finding other devices, not letting anyone control your Mac.
Why does remoted run when I plug in my iPhone?
Your Mac discovers the iPhone and the services it offers through remoted. That discovery is what lets Finder and Xcode work with the device.
Can I disable remoted?
No, and there’s no setting for it. It is part of macOS and has no configuration options.
